How to Prepare for Archery for Beginners

Archery is quite a rewarding hobby which builds focus, patience and physical strength. As calming as it may seem, it could be a challenging experience. Suitable for all ages, this sport inculcates consistency and discipline among players. Preparing for archery requires a person to build physical strength, invest in the right equipment, develop mental focus and master the technique. Here are a few tips for beginners.

Choose the right equipment – Invest in suitable gear starting with a bow: a traditional long bow, compound or a recurve bow which is ideal for most beginners. One should be able to draw their bow effortlessly without strain. Arrows must also match the bow in length, weight and spine. Also get accessories such as release aid or a finger tab, a bow sight, quiver and an arm guard.

Build physical endurance – The sport mostly relies on upper body strength. Players must focus on strengthening their core, shoulders and back with the help of resistance band workouts, planks, rows and other such exercises. Good posture is key in achieving success in archery and so is balance. Practice standing tall that too with even weight distribution for faster results.

Work on proper shooting form – Mastering a form is crucial. Begin with stable stance with the feet being shoulder-width apart and must be perpendicular to the target. One can learn by watching professional archers on the field. It is all about getting the body in the right position, aim well, release carefully and hold the position until the target is hit.

Train mentally and be consistent with training – Archery requires players to be in control of their mind, concentrate and avoid getting diverted. Apart from breathwork for staying calm, archers should also use visualization technique for the purpose of picturing a successful shot. Consistent practice sessions will be much more useful.
